A Contemporary Farmhouse

Set with in rolling farmland just one hour from Melbourne, Gabled Horizon House occupies a rare threshold between urban proximity and rural immersion. Designed by Dasch Associates, the project transforms and enlarges an existing traditional dwelling into a contemporary multi-generational retreat that rises quietly from the surrounding grassy fields.

Clad in warm grey handmade Japanese tiles and articulated blackwood, the home maintains the familiar silhouette of a rural farmhouse while introducing are fined, modern sensibility. What reads externally as a singular gabled volume reveals internally a layered and carefully orchestrated spatial composition.

The entrance, relocated to the southern elevation, opens into a transverse living space oriented toward expansive valley views. Here, a restrained material palette establishes both warmth and clarity: polished concrete floors reference the agricultural vernacular, while a dark oak kitchen with a black slate worktop introduces depth and graphic precision.

At the heart of the home, a sculptural fireplace integrated into a concrete structural wall anchors the communal zone. Positioned between the kitchen to the west and the living room to the east, it operates as both spatial divider and symbolic centre. The adjoining double-height dining space reinforces the vertical generosity of the A-frame geometry above, where clean lines create a sense of openness while maintaining intimacy beneath the sloping roof.

Large, glazed façades dissolve the boundary between interior and landscape, framing ever-changing rural vistas and allowing light to animate timber and concrete surfaces throughout the day. The architecture constantly negotiates between enclosure and openness, shelter and exposure.

Responding to the complexities of multi-generational living, the plan transitions gradually from communal areas to independent private retreats. Bedrooms branch from the central living core, allowing autonomy without disconnection. The result is a cohesive architectural expression that supports coexistence while preserving individuality.

Through a disciplined interplay of volume, material, and light, Dasch Associates have crafted a contemporary farmhouse that feels both grounded and expansive - a place where family life unfolds in direct conversation with the surrounding landscape.
